About the Temple

On the bank of the Valapattanam river near Taliparamba stands the Parassini Madappura, the best-known home of Sree Muthappan – the beloved folk deity of north Malabar. Worship here is unlike that of most Kerala temples: Muthappan is honoured through theyyam, and every day, morning and evening, the deity appears before devotees in the person of the theyyam performer, listens to their troubles and blesses them.

The Madappura is known for welcoming everyone, whatever their caste or religion. Every visitor is given the simple prasadam of tea and boiled payar, and meals are served to pilgrims. Dogs are treated with special affection, since a dog is said to have been Muthappan's faithful companion – bronze dogs guard the entrance, and the prasadam is first given to a dog.

History & Aithihyam

The story goes that Ayyankara Vazhunnavar, a chieftain of Eruvessi, and his wife Padikutti Amma had long prayed for a child. One day Padikutti Amma found a baby boy lying in a basket of flowers by the river and took him home as Shiva's gift. As the boy grew, he loved the forest, went hunting and ate meat, which troubled the orthodox household. When his foster mother finally saw his divine form, he left home, covering his eyes with a poikannu – a false eye-shield – so that the fire of his gaze would harm no one.

Devotees believe that on his travels he met a toddy-tapper named Chanthan, who refused him a drink and was turned to stone; when Chanthan's wife prayed, Muthappan forgave him and restored him, and the family became his first devotees. That is why toddy and fish are still part of the offerings here. A dog followed Muthappan everywhere, which is why dogs are honoured at every Madappura. Muthappan himself is seen by devotees as a form of Shiva, and his two theyyam forms – Thiruvappana and Vellattam – are often explained as Vishnu and Shiva together.

The Parassini Madappura has long been associated with the Thiyya community, who conduct the poojas, while the theyyam itself is performed by members of the Vannan community. Unlike classical Kerala temples, the shrine is a white three-storeyed building by the river. Over the years it has grown into one of the most visited places of worship in Kannur district, and Muthappan Madappuras are found wherever people from north Malabar have settled.
